| 08/22/2008IN AN UNEASY PEACE FEAR HAUNTS TIBETAN MONKSEither way, Tongren, for now, has come the closest it ever gets to peace which is to say that the fear of imminent violence has given way to a resigned anger and long-term hopelessness. "They have stopped for the Olympics, but after they have finished we don't know what they will do," says Jigdal. "Maybe things will go bad again. Maybe the police will hurt us again. We don't know. But our future is poor; our future is nothing."

And moreover, can the Dalai Lama teach how to resolve this issue? Fittingly, the Dalai Lama reminded the audience that change, compassion and global responsibility begin with individuals, not just with the Dalai Lama.

08/23/2008A LETTER TO HIS HOLINESS FROM A CHINESEI have to tell you that my impression of you in my childhood and youth was that you were a flayer of human skin, a demon who picked flesh from human bones. From this point alone, you have probably guessed that I am Han Chinese. Indeed, I grew up within the Communist education system. But in 1997, I chanced upon an opportunity to travel to Tibet. That was the first time I (secretly) saw your photograph, your kind and compassionate visage, and it made me doubt the Communists' propaganda.
| | 08/23/2008SYMPATHY TOWARDS TIBETAN CAUSE AND WRITING ON THE WALL FOR CHINAAgreed that China is now a world power and Nepal, being a small neighbor which looks forward to its support and assistance for its development, should also give importance to her legitimate concerns. Still, there is no need for Nepal to compromise on its own values and risk being portrayed as China's stooge.

07/05/2008STATEMENT BY SPECIAL ENVOY OF HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA, KASUR LODI GYALTSEN GYARIEven though His Holiness the Dalai Lama is seeking a solution to the issue of Tibet within the PRC, it is a fact that it has become an issue of great international concern. In this context, we had hoped that the Chinese leadership would reciprocate our efforts by taking tangible steps during this round. On the contrary, due to their excessive concern about legitimacy the Chinese side even failed to agree to our proposal of issuing a joint statement with the aim of committing both parties to the dialogue process.
| | | | 04/02/2008 AN APPEAL FROM HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMAI would like to express my appreciation and gratitude to the world leaders, Parliamentarians, NGOs and public who have expressed their concern over the recent deeply saddening and tragic events in Tibet. We are also grateful for their efforts in persuading the Chinese authorities to exercise restraint in dealing with the peaceful protesters, while at the same time calling for meaningful dialogue to resolve the issue.
